  • STRIVE

STRIVE stands either for "Students Taking Renewed Interest in the Value of Education" or "Students, Teachers, and Rotarians in Valued Education".

STRIVE began in this area right here in Maumee Rotary in 1995.  It is a mentoring program focused on the seniors at Maumee High School.  Students, who are not according to their counselors and teachers at MHS utilizing their potentials, are offered the opportunity to join STRIVE. Those students then will  meet as a group once a month with a Rotarian and usually a guest speaker during a regular class period.  This meeting is directed at academic/ vocational goals with the speaker who will "talk from the heart" about the "real world of life and business".  Speakers often mention their successes as well as their failures so as to depict a realistic view.  Refreshments and discussion follow.

The purpose of STRIVE is to encourage the student to improve each day: to attend school each day, be on time for class, be prepared and involved, be a good citizen both in school and at home, develop a positive attitude, and think ahead toward realistic academic/vocational goals.

Incentives, both intrinsic and extrinsic, are offered to the students.  Some speakers offer jobs.  Rotary offers renewable scholarships to those students who have demonstrated the most improvement. Such improvement is measured by teachers and counselor and at times by parents, in GPA, attitude, citizenship and other areas.

At the present time over thirty Rotary clubs in our District 6600 have STRIVE.  Our district also offers scholarships on a competitive basis. Our Maumee Rotary Club has had four winners thus far.  Through the years we have had hundreds of students who have benefited from STRIVE at MHS.

If you would like to be involved contact either Cindi Smith, the chairperson, or Terry Mohler, Past President.
